Seth Godwin had a post on his blog today that really resonated with me. I thought I would share. Seth is a genius in marketing and you should definitely check out his blog for daily inspiration.

“Art is what we call…

the thing an artist does.

It’s not the medium or the oil or the price or whether it hangs on a wall or you eat it. What matters, what makes it art, is that the person who made it overcame the resistance, ignored the voice of doubt and made something worth making. Something risky. Something human.

Art is not in the eye of the beholder. It’s in the soul of the artist.”

I took some time this week to think of a photograph that is a bit different than the usual “dress them up and put them in front of the tree”. Lynne liked the concept I came up with, so we set it all up on Sunday. Zach was a little leery of putting lit Christmas lights around him, but we convinced him it would be fun. He was great during the whole 10 minutes of shooting and only during the last couple of minutes did he complain of the “big camera flash” scaring him. To get some good, natural looks from him, Lynne asked him about what he wanted for Christmas and about all the fun things we did over the weekend. The second picture, where he looks a bit mischievous, he is actually getting ready to tell us something with a huge grin on his face!!

Anyway, I think these two work well, and they are now part of the Christmas card this year…

Cheers!!

He is growing up and it is going to fast.

We took Zach to his first day of school, well open house anyway, and he was awesome. As you can imagine all kids react differently in these situations. Some clung to mom and dad, some were comfortable to play as long as mom and dad were near and others just ran all over the place and played with all the kids. Zach was a bit of the last two, warming up more and more as time passed.

It was an experience that I will never forget… and of course we have pictures. Here are just a few.

Wow, a bit behind on posting photos to the blog here. I have been so focused on getting the final products in your hands, that I have missed some of the sharing that I get to do on here.

Truth be told, its my son’s 2nd birthday on Thursday and I have been dedicating all my free time to helping my wife, clean inside and out, shop and get all those last minute things done before the big party on Saturday. Zach’s God Mother (& Lynne’s Cousin), Lisa Delaney, is coming down from Massachusetts. We also have a good friend of Lynne’s (and mine for that matter), Rhonda Thompson, coming down from Athens with her son Aiden. Lots to do around the house to get ready for food, drinks and fun with family and friends.

I will see if I can get some pictures posted on Tuesday or Wednesday…

When I grow up, there’s gonna be a cure.

Thats the t-shirt my son will wear on Sunday, October 5th at Disney’s Wide World of Sports. My family will be participating in Orlando’s 12th annual Race for the Cure. My wife and I have walked this event each year since we met. The only one we missed was when Zach was born. This year, we are members of a team called “Pretty in Pink“. If you follow the link you can donate to the Susan Komen research for breast cancer or, better yet, you can join our team and walk with us. Its a special event for my wife and her family and something that is very moving to be a part of. I will, of course, have my camera and challenge any of my bride and grooms to participate. Free photos for all!!

As the organizer and leader of the team, Shannon Stinson of A Belle Soiree Wedding and Events planned a fund raiser to raise additional money for the cure. She partnered with Cynthia at the Pink Heart Boutique, who hosted the event. We had a DJ, masseuse, a couple of gift baskets for a raffle and many other great things. Oh… I almost forgot!! I was there too. Below are some of my favorite photos from the evening.

Babies are always so much fun to hold and to take pictures of. I was recently given the opportunity to spend an hour with the twins of Janet and Eric and take some photos. Their babies were premature, but only spent a few weeks in the hospital. They are now safe and at home, but are still hooked up to 24hr monitoring… just in case. The guys are absolutely beautiful and so, so small. It was a pleasure being there and I thank the two of you….

Sunday, May 29th was my son’s Baptism… the day marks an important event in his and our family’s life.. We planned a huge party at our home and had extended family travel from up north to be here. The Baptism “robe” (ok, so it was a dress!!), has been worn by 23 other family members in Lynne’s family and is approximately 40 years old. So, why is this important to a photography blog? Well, in some ways it isnt… but in some ways it is.

Obviously, with a major “life” event like this there is going to be photos taken. I wanted to document this event and tell the story through my photos (just like I can do for your wedding, event or family). However, documenting and participating are very difficult to do together. I have the tendency to be the photographer and not the dad…. and miss those important moments. Sure I grab them through the lens, but its just not the same. I slowly gave control of my camera to my father-in-law and just absorbed the moments. I am glad I did….

So again, why is this important to a photography blog? I know of several folks that are married or are getting married who have a family member or close friend that promised to photograph their wedding. This person either volunteered (or was coerced) or asked by the Bride and Groom. I would like for you to take a step back and ask if that is really a fair thing to ask of someone close to you. The question isnt about whether or not they can do a good job… or you saving some costs to your wedding (thats another story). It is about being fair to your friend/family. If they photograph your wedding, they will not participate in it. Let me repeat that…. if you ask them to photograph you wedding…. they will not enjoy the festivities AT ALL. Now, is it really fair to ask a friend or family member to miss your wedding?? If you cant afford one, find a student… find a friend of a friend. Better yet, hire me… as I have some really affordable packages!!

Most folks think you can do both (participate and photograph), but a good photographer is constantly looking for that moment… that kiss, hug, dance… There is no downtime for a photographer at a wedding. I think that is the biggest lesson I took away from my first wedding. I could not believe how busy and how much work it really was before, during and after the wedding.

I am really glad that I choose to relinquish my camera for the Baptism. I took the traditional “getting ready” shots of Zach putting on the 40 year old gown and used my experience to line up some of the portraits…. but other than that…. I was just a VERY PROUD DAD.

I love you Zach….
